TC Gammons: Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Coordinator Of Operations

TC Gammons, Coordinator of Operations, at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) talks about salaries in the sports industry.

1. Success is deserved and earned every day. How important is it to have this mindset in the sports industry?

I believe if you are not trying to be successful in the industry then what is your goal? No matter what industry you are in you should always have the mindset to be successful. The more you want to be successful, the harder you are going to work to achieve success.

2. When interviewing for a position, what are some things candidates need to know about your organization?

Not just the ACC but for any position, you always need to be prepared. Do your research, and be able to ask questions. Never leave an interview without asking some questions. The more you know going into the interview, the better off you will be. Always be able to tell the organization what you can bring to the table. Most people always want to know what the organization can do for them, when in turn you must be able to better the team/organization by what you bring to the table. Remember, first impressions are only once. You always want that first impression to be good, so it is not the last one.

3. In the sports industry early on the salaries on fairly low. How can students and young professionals stay positive and continue to develop their skills?

Something that I have always told myself and others is that if you truly enjoy what you do and where you work you will never have to “Work” a day in your career. Same thing can be said about salaries. If you enjoy what you are doing, the finances will not matter as much as it would if you were doing something you did not enjoy.

The sports industry is a “back-loaded” industry so to speak meaning you will more than likely make the most financial gain on the back end of your career. It is like most things in life; you must prove yourself to be rewarded.

4. Sometimes students and young professionals get a job with a sports team/organization and become fans instead of employees. How can they prepare themselves to be professional employees for the team/organization?

Once you become part of a team or organization, you become a representation of that team or organization. You must always represent them in a professional manner no matter where you at or what you are doing.
